1 Peter 2:1–3

Envy: The feeling of unhappiness at the blessing and fortune of others. Geared towards what other have, and what we may think we don’t have.

Jealousy: Sometimes geared towards what we have, and the fear or losing it.

Jerry Bridges in his book “Respectable Sins” says, “Sinful jealousy occurs when we are afraid someone is going to become equal to or even superior to us.”

Envy is a Heart Issue

Envy is a desire for another’s gifts, possessions, position or achievements, closely associated with jealousy.

Envy is a result of human sin: Gal 5:19-21 Pr 23:17; Mt 15:19-20; Mk 7:21-23; Ro 1:29; 1Co 3:3; 1Ti 6:4; Tit 3:3; 1Pe 2:1-2

Envy is forbidden: Ps 37:1; Pr 3:31; 24:1; Gal 5:26
