Chapter 24 enumerates the twenty-four classes of priests that would serve in the future Temple. Each priest and man had a place and purpose to serve within the Temple. Chapter 25 lists the members of the musical staff. These people sang, and played before the Lord. One man, however, stands out from our reading today.
“All these were sons of Heman the king’s seer. They were given him through the promises of God to exalt him. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. All these men were under the supervision of their father for the music of the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the supervision of the king” (1 Chr. 25:5-6).
Heman was the grandson of Samuel, and also from the Levite tribe of Korah (1 Chr. 6:33; 15:17). Scripture reveals that Heman was a seer, a singer and musician (1 Chr. 25:1; 2 Chr. 5:12; 35:15). Psalm 88 is also accredited to Heman.
Apparently, the Lord had fulfilled a promise to give him children. The music that came from Heman and his family was prophetic. Notice that their music was given for the music of the Temple of the Lord, and for the ministry at the house of God (1 Chr. 25:6). Heman didn’t raise his children to use their gifts anywhere other than the house of God.
Maybe you feel insignificant in the grand scheme of God’s kingdom. Perhaps you feel like you are overlooked for doing the hard work of raising your children in the house of the Lord. I want you to know, beloved, God is taking notice. If God included Heman’s name and family in Scripture for simply singing and playing music in the house of the Lord, then He also sees your labor and faithfulness.
