Before David’s death, he proclaimed that Solomon would be Israel’s next king. Of course, that didn’t come about without some family turmoil (1 Kings 1). David wanted to insure Israel’s future with Solomon at the helm. The security of the kingdom was bound up in Solomon’s obedience to the Law of Moses (1 Kings 2:1-4). In other words, God would bless Israel, as long as her king walked in step with God.

Countries and nations would be in a lot better shape if their leaders adhered to God’s laws. Churches and ministries would be a lot more successful in reaching their Kingdom potential if they would listen to and obey God’s Word. Likewise, Christians would be a lot happier if they allowed the Word of God to guide their lives.

Notice that David uses six words to describe God’s Word: His charge, His ways, His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies (1:3). What was Solomon to obey? All of God’s Word. There wasn’t one thing that Solomon was to neglect or overlook.

The apostle Paul wrote, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Tim. 3:16-17). God has inspired all of Scripture. Paul wrote elsewhere: “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Rom. 15:4). Therefore, all of Scripture is profitable for teaching, reproving, correcting, instructing, and learning. And the outcome of all of these is patience, comfort, and hope!

Beloved, there are bountiful blessings in the Word of God! Let us not just be hearers of His Word, but let us be doers of His Word!
