Moses’ confrontation with Pharaoh came to its climatic finale. The death of the firstborn would be the final plague in Egypt. This final plague involved instructions for Israel. Every Israelite household was to take an unblemished lamb and kill it. Next, they were to take the blood and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of their houses. The Lord said, “For I will through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast.” He continued, “And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt” (Ex. 12:12-13).
In order for the Israelites to be spared from the death angel, an innocent lamb had to be killed. Furthermore, the blood of the lamb had to be applied to the doorposts of the house. It’s one thing to believe that a lamb had to be slain, but to have the blood of the lamb applied to your house is something else altogether.
Many hold to the truth that Jesus Christ, as the Lamb of God, had to die for the sins of humanity. However, Jesus’ death and resurrection from the dead must be applied to your life. The Israelites could have simply killed the lamb, leaving the blood on the ground. If they failed to apply the blood of the lamb to the doorposts, the death angel would not passover that home. The death angel had to see the blood applied to the home in order for that family to be spared.
Brothers and sisters, believing in Jesus Christ’s vicarious death and resurrection is vital to salvation. Additionally, you must call upon His name in faith, repent of your sins, be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:21, 36-39; 8:12-17; 10:44-48; 19:1-6). That is the New Testament adaptation of applying the blood of the Lamb to your life.
