The drunkards of Ephraim mocked the Lord’s message. It was as if they believed His commands to be too simple, and only for small children. They said, “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” (Isa. 28:9-10).

Though the men of Ephraim’s ridicule was wrong, their message was partially true. The truth of God’s Word is simple. God has given us His Word in plain language. The Word of God isn’t shrouded in codes and mysteries. The truth of God’s message isn’t just for the ivory tower intellectual. Rather, it is for everyone, no matter your education, ethnicity, or age. God has spoken, and it is His will for everyone to understand His message. On the other hand, those who give themselves to study the Word of God quickly realize the depth and profundity of God’s Word. Paradoxically it is both simple and profound!

God’s truth as plain as it is, however, can’t be learned overnight. It must be learned precept upon precept; line upon line; here a little, and there a little. There are no shortcuts to understanding truth. To accumulate a knowledge of God’s Word is to do it daily and consistently. Thankfully we can be assisted and equipped by the Spirit of Truth (Jn. 14:16-17).

Brother and sisters, let us at once take up the Word of God. Read it, study it, and apply it. Then do it again daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. And after time you will begin to comprehend all that you have learned.
