Israel had generously brought offerings for the building of the Tabernacle (Ex. 25:1-8; 35:4-36:7). Now that the Tabernacle had been erected, Israel was bringing offerings in support of the ministry and the maintenance of the Tabernacle (Num. 7:1-2).
Numbers chapter 7 is the longest chapter in the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible). The twelve tribes of Israel, represented by heads of each tribe, brought offerings in six covered wagons drawn by two oxen each. A total of 240 animals, 2400 shekels of silver, and 120 shekels of gold were offered as gifts to the Lord. The chapter records the same exact offering given by each respective tribe.
What may look like a long boring chapter, covering each tribe’s offering, actually offers the valuable lesson that God takes record of everything we give.
The Lord takes record when you give of your time (Eph. 5:15-16). The Lord takes record when you give of your talents (Ecc. 9:10). The Lord takes record when you give Him thanks (Ps. 30:12; 35:18). The Lord takes record when you give your tithe and offerings (Mal. 3:8-11). The Lord has a heavenly register with your name in it, and He is taking account of all that you give (Lk. 10:20; 1 Cor. 3:8; Php. 4:3).
Our Savior gave His life for us (Matt. 20:28; Jn. 3:16). The least we could do is give of our lives and abundance. The Lord said it best, “It is more blessed to give, than to receive” (Acts. 20:35). Let us give cheerfully, knowing He is taking record.
