Psalm 19 records that God has revealed Himself in two distinct ways. First, creation has revealed God. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard” (Psalms 19:1-3). All of creation speaks of the power of God. The apostle Paul wrote that God has revealed Himself to everyone through creation (Rom. 1:17-20). In theology we call this General Revelation. Though God has revealed Himself through the wonder of creation, it is quite limiting. Creation reveals that there is a Creator, but it doesn’t reveal all of His characteristics and attributes.
Therefore, it is necessary that God reveal Himself in a fuller capacity beyond creation. The Psalmist writes, “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb” (Psalms 19:7-10). God has revealed Himself through the Scriptures. It is through the Bible that we can know of God’s character, His justice, mercy, grace, and love. This is called Special Revelation in theology.
The Psalmist refers to Scripture as: Law; Testimony; Statutes, Commandments; Fear; Judgments. The characteristics of Scripture are called: perfect; sure; right; pure; clean; true. Finally, he lists the effects of Scripture: converting the soul; making wise the simple; rejoicing the heart; enlightening the eyes; endures forever; produces righteousness.
To summarize, the Word of God is the most comprehensive revelation of God, that can enhance and transform the life of any person who believes. No wonder the Psalmist said the Word of God is more to be desired than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb (Psalms 19:10).
