Stuck. You can get your vehicle stuck in the mud. You could get stuck on a hard question during a test. You could be stuck in a terrible job. There’s many ways we could get stuck. But the worse kind of stuck, is being stuck in the mire of sin.
David said, “He brought me out also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings” (Ps. 40:2). David knew what it was like to sink down into the pit of sin. And like getting your car stuck in the mud, the more you try to get yourself out of it, the deeper you sink, and the harder it becomes to get out.
That’s the slime pit of sin. No matter how hard you try, no matter how hard you push or pull, or clinch your teeth and step on the gas, you can’t get out.
When we get stuck, we call for help. Jesus is willing to come and bring you out of the sludge of sin. He’ll place your feet on a firm foundation, and give you a new song to sing. I can still hear the hymn He Brought Me Out whenever I read this psalm: “He brought me out of the miry clay, He set my feet on the Rock to stay; He puts a song in my soul today, A song of praise, hallelujah!”
